Red with Black Interior

The Giulietta is the car that took Alfa Romeo from being a relatively small production company to being an economically viable and successful firm. Prior to that, they had produced large and expensive cars, and never in very large numbers. With the Giulietta, however, Alfa Romeo produced significant numbers of these charming and capable cars. Its success was due in part to its unique placement in the market. It was neither a large hugely expensive car, nor was it very small utility car (such as the Fiat 500). Instead, the Giulietta was affordable enough so that many could buy it, yet permitted a more glamorous and useful approach to motoring that really struck a chord with buyers on both sides of the Atlantic.

Essentially the Italian take on the classic sports car formula, the cars coupled lovely bodywork by Pininfarina (on open cars) or Bertone (on closed cars) with Alfa Romeo's sophisticated twin cam engine and a wonderfully lively and entertaining chassis.

This particular car is a very nice driver level example that has seen considerable recent mechanical work in the last three years. Included among this was a complete rebuilt of the brake system including master cylinder, relined brake shoes, new wheel cylinders, and redone brake drums. New shock absorbers were fitted, along with the clutch and a resurfaced flywheel. The distributor, coil, and spark plug wires were also replaced, as were the front wheel bearings, voltage regulator, headlight switch, and various other items. The instruments were rebuilt by Palo Alto Speedometer, the speedometer cable replaced, and various chrome trim and new seals and weatherstripping fitted. Additionally, the wheels were refinished and new hubcaps installed. Various other adjustments and service items were addressed and the majority of the mechanical work was carried out by well-regarded Alfa Romeo specialist Larry Buskirk from 2011 to 2013. The car was off the road for some years prior to that but was being looked after by Johannes Huwyler in the early 2000s.

Cosmetically, the car is an attractive driver level example with glossy paint over a nice body. The body is straight and the doors fit very well. The fit on the front and rear deck lids is good but not excellent and is consistent with how most Giuliettas seem to be. The paint is nice but has a few minor surface blemishes and other minor issues. The lights and glass are excellent, as are the wheels. The chrome varies in condition, showing some age in some places while being very good in others. There is a thin spot in one of the headlight trims, and pitting on the door handles, tail light trims, and trunk handle. The bumpers are in good condition other than a few spots on the front bumper where the finish is blemished.

The interior is excellent overall. The carpets, dashboard, and seat upholstery are all excellent. The steering wheel is excellent including the chrome on the horn ring, although there are a few cracks in the horn button. The dashboard pad and controls are excellent and the car retains a period Motorola radio, for which it has an original owners manual as well. The clear plastic on the dashboard switches has some cracking as well. The rubber floor mats are correct and in excellent shape. The convertible top is in good condition and while not recent, is intact and does not need replacement.

The engine compartment is above average for a driver level car and shows signs of recent maintenance. Its presentation is generally correct with details such as decal on the brake fluid reservoir and new hood pad. The engine is fairly clean the correct air cleaner housing is in place. The trunk presents well with nice paint and correct rubber floor mat. The visible structural elements appear to be sound.

The car is a particularly outstanding driving example, and in our considerable Giulietta experience, the 42,000 indicated miles are likely to be from new based on the driving experience. It is an extremely coherent, tight, well-balanced car, where all controls feel as they should and no aspect is more new or less well-resolved than any other. It is an incredibly satisfying Giulietta to drive, one that reminds the driver why these cars are so well-regarded and also is sure to please the connoisseur who has sought the Giulietta that lives up to the memory of how much fun these cars are to drive.

This is an excellent example to acquire an attractive Giulietta that is ready to be driven and enjoyed. Thoroughly and capably serviced, it is ready to enjoy and should be eligible for a wide variety of prestigious events in which continuation Giuliettas are permitted. Cosmetically, the car is attractive as well, but not so nice as to discourage its new owner from regularly driving it. It is complete with original owner’s manual, literature for the Motorola radio, and many thousands of dollars of invoices for recent maintenance and restorative work.
