1958 MG A Roadster
Engine No. 18GBUH10704
British Racing Green with Tan Interior
A complete restoration was finished on this car in 2003. As part of the restoration this car was updated with a 1800 engine and disc brakes from a MG B Roadster, enhancing the usability factor for this example. During the restoration processes, a better body was located which now replaces the original. The car is registered and titled in Oregon using the engine number. While not a matching numbers unit, having been restored, this car is considerably better that the majority of MG As in existence from a mechanical and cosmetic standpoint.
The body was completely stripped to bare metal and resulting repaint is of very high quality. There is one blend line on the trunk, but no other significant marks anywhere on the exterior. All the body panels are straight, with good gaps throughout. Much of the exterior chrome; bumpers, headlight rims, and wheels are new. The grill insert is original and the surround has been refinished. The windshield frame has some scratches and is probably original. New windshield glass was installed as part of the restoration, although there are some light pock marks in the new glass. The soft top is like-new with new back vinyl upholstery over a restored frame.
The interior is also restored and makes an excellent impression. The dash is repainted to match the exterior, and the gauges are restored. Most of the switches are new, as is the steering wheel. The black carpet is like-new, and the door and leather seat upholstery is very nice, showing little or no wear.
The engine compartment, trunk, and underside are all nicely detailed and representative of a restored car.
The restoration also included the mechanical components. The engine was rebuilt and a second level cam was installed. A new exhaust system, wiring harness, and radiator were fitted. The entire hydraulic system was gone through, and the suspension was rebuilt as needed. Accordingly, the car has a fresh, tight, crisp feel with minimal play in the front end or steering box. The car starts easily and sounds good with minimal smoke. The transmission was renewed as part of the restoration, but the car occasionally pops out of first and reverse, probably because the rugs will not allow free movement of the shift stick.
New chassis tags were obtained as part of the restoration, but not stamped. With the car comes the jack, spare wheel with tire, and some receipts for the parts used in the restoration. There are no side curtains with the car. With Austin Healeys in comparable condition selling for nearly twice our asking price, this car is an attractive and accessible buy for someone looking to bring back those high school or college motoring memories.
