1958 Alfa Romeo Giulietta Spider
s/n 149504020, engine no. AR1315*44067*
Black with Black Interior

The Giulietta is the car that took Alfa Romeo from being a relatively small production company to being an economically viable and successful firm. Prior to that, they had produced large and expensive cars, and never in very large numbers. With the Giulietta, however, Alfa Romeo produced significant numbers of these charming and capable cars. Its success was due in part to its unique placement in the market. It was neither a large hugely expensive car, nor was it very small utility car (such as the Fiat 500). Instead, the Giulietta was affordable enough so that many could buy it, yet permitted a more glamorous and useful approach to motoring that really struck a chord with buyers on both sides of the Atlantic.

Essentially the Italian take on the classic sports car formula, the cars coupled lovely bodywork by Pininfarina (on open cars) or Bertone (on closed cars) with Alfa Romeo's sophisticated twin cam engine and a wonderfully lively and entertaining chassis.

This particular car is a desirable short wheelbase 750 series car with all the early features including small tail lights and early gauges. It was campaigned in SCCA G-Production in the 60′s but has been converted back for street use. It has been cosmetically restored and completely serviced and is one of the best driving Giuliettas we have had the pleasure to encounter. The car has a 5-speed transmission and the engine has been rebuilt. The engine uses Veloce rods, header, pistons, and cams and is beautifully tuned, being extremely responsive and surprisingly tractable as well. The entire driving experience is tight and coherent in a way that few open Alfa Romeos seem to achieve. The chassis and suspension are unusually taught, with a sharpness and responsiveness that is uncharacteristic for a Giulietta. The car turns in positively and is marvelously precise and controllable through turns. The gearbox works superbly with excellent synchromesh on all gears. The brakes work in a linear fashion and the entire experience is an absolute joy.

Cosmetically, the car presents well. It appears essentially unmodified from outside, other than the fitment of hood pins to secure the engine lid. The body is straight and has nice paint with some swirl marks and a few stars and dents on the left rear fender above the bumper. The chrome is in good condition with some swirl marks and light scratching. The trim and badges are present and very good condition. The top appears to be recent and is vinyl. It is in excellent shape although it does not fit properly at the top of the windscreen when erected. The wheels are restored and wear Vredestein tires. The lights and glass are in good condition as well.

The interior is good shape, with nice upholstery with red piping and attractive square weave carpeting with red edging. Both are in excellent condition. The dashboard is in good shape and has been painted satin black. The instruments are in good shape but show some of the typical yellowing that affects these cars. The steering wheel is in excellent shape other than some cracking to the horn button. The firewall and under dash area are unrestored and show some age. There is no heater and the wipers are inoperative. The car has been converted to a push button starter as well.

The engine compartment is purposeful rather than freshly restored. The valve cover has been wrinkle painted black and the Webers are sparklingly clean. The oil lines are braided stainless steel with Aeroquip fittings and an oil cooler has been added in the nose of the car. The inner fenders are finished in flat black and are not particularly fresh in appearance. The trunk was repainted and fitted with a new square weave carpet mat to match the interior carpet. The structural elements visible in the trunk, including the floor, are very sound and free of corrosion.

This is an excellent opportunity to acquire a great driving Giulietta. A 750 series car, this example is widely event eligible and given the exceptional driving experience provided by this car, it would be ideal to use in events and tours.
