1958 Alfa Romeo Giulietta 750 Spider

Black with Black Interior

The Giulietta brought Alfa Romeo from being a relatively small and low volume company to becoming an economically viable and successful manufacturer of production road cars. Prior to that, they had produced large and expensive cars, seldom in large numbers. With the Giulietta, however, Alfa Romeo produced significant numbers of these charming and capable cars. Its success was due in part to its unique placement in the market. It was neither a large or expensive car, nor was it a small utility car (such as the Fiat 500). Instead, the Giulietta was affordable enough so that many could buy it. The balance of style and function permitted a more glamorous and useful approach to motoring that struck a chord with buyers on both sides of the Atlantic.

This particular car is a desirable short wheelbase 750 series car with all the early features including small tail lights and early gauges. In the 1960s, the car was formerly campaigned in SCCA G-Production, but was converted back for street use some years ago. During the conversion, this Giulietta was cosmetically restored including a rebuilt engine using Veloce rods, header, pistons, and cams mated to a 5-speed transmission. Shortly after the work was completed, the car was sold to the current owner who has further refined it with attention to detail and important mechanical improvements.

The current owner purchased the car a few years ago, electing to re-do the upholstery to a very nice standard. Further mechanical work on the car was done totaling over $10,000.00 in receipts. On the exterior of the car, minor rust repairs were performed on the left front fender and much of the grill replaced. Extensive testing and mechanical evaluation was performed to balance the driveline properly including driveshaft, engine mounts, gearbox mounts, and proper height settings. The head and intake was removed and inspected. New carburetors were installed along with a new cold air box, a new flywheel starter ring, and a new starter. New exhaust, and a new battery were also installed and a battery cutoff switch installed. Top shop professionals, known for their work on high-end sports cars, performed all the mechanical work on the car to a very high standard. The results deliver an extremely responsive and surprisingly tractable car with a very cohesive driving experience and satisfying feel to the car.

Cosmetically, the car presents well overall with nice glossy paint and handsomely fitted interior. It appears essentially unmodified from the outside, other than the fitment of hood pins to secure the hood. The body is straight and has nice paint with some light swirl marks and a few minor chips. The chrome is in good condition with some light scratching. The trim and badges all appear in very good condition. The lights and glass are in good condition as well. The vinyl top is in nice condition, however it does not fit snugly at the top of the windscreen when in place. The wheels are restored and wear a set of properly sized tires with good tread remaining.

The interior is good shape, with particularly nice attention to detail in the newly fitted upholstery. The dashboard is in good shape and has been painted satin black. The instruments are in good condition with mellowing to the dial faces, creating a nice aged hue. The steering wheel is in as new condition. The firewall and under dash area are beautifully carpeted. There is no heater, but the wipers are operable. The car has been converted to a push button starter, adding to the charm and racing heritage associated with Alfa Romeo cars.

The engine compartment is purposefully clean and tidy, but not overdone or fussy. The valve cover has been wrinkle painted black and the new Webers are sparklingly clean. The oil lines are braided stainless steel with Aeroquip fittings and an oil cooler has been added in the nose of the car. The trunk was repainted and fitted with a newer square weave carpet mat to match the interior carpet. The structural elements visible in the trunk, including the floor, are very sound and free of corrosion.

The car starts easily and settles into a very nice idle. Recent engine and service work have resulted in a very nicely balanced car that is a delight to drive. The chassis and suspension are unusually taught, with a sharpness and responsiveness reflective of the careful mechanical work performed on the car. The gearbox works superbly with excellent synchromesh on all gears, while handling is delightful in corners. While many of these cars are often over restored and picky, this example is not only enjoyable to drive, there is none of the fear or concern using it as intended.

This is an excellent opportunity to acquire a great driving Giulietta that presents driver-ready cosmetics and enjoyable mechanicals. Rarely found in such well-sorted condition, this 750 Giulietta is ready for tours, events, or delightful vineyard-laced jaunts along scenic winding roads.
