1965 Porsche 356C Coupe
s/n 222323 engine no 731072
Bali Blue with Black Leather Interior

Ferdinand Porsche’s first roadgoing model bearing his own name was the 356. Introduced in 1948, it underwent continuous development during the production run, which finally ended in 1965. By production’s end, the car had come a long way. Engine output over doubled, from 40hp at introduction to just shy of 100hp in the last examples. The ultimate development from these years was the 356 C, which represented significant advances over earlier models, including the adoption of disc brakes. They were available in several configurations as both coupes and cabriolets, and with several motors.

This particular car is a wonderful driving 356C from the last year of production. It has been in the care of the current owner since 1999, and in California since at least 1986. The motor was rebuilt by Lukes and Shoreman years ago and still runs extremely well. It is fitted with a correct type but non-matching engine and has had Weber carburetors added. The car includes a Certificate of Authenticity which indicates that it was originally finished in Irish Green with black interior. It comes with spare keys, tool roll with tools, and original owner’s manual.

The car has an excellent body. The panels fit and operate superbly and the car is extremely straight throughout. The gaps are also excellent. The car has an older repaint that is showing age in several places, including chips to the front of the car from road use, chips elsewhere about the body, some minor scratches, and some haziness on the roof. The chrome is very good to excellent, with pitting in some areas such as the door handles and window frames. Other areas are in very good shape with only light scratching. The lights are excellent throughout, and the car has European front and rear turn signal lenses as well as desirable Cibié headlamps. The glass is very good, with light road wear on the windscreen and some light scratches to the front side windows.

The interior is in very good condition. The leather on the seats has nice patina. The carpets are in very good condition and the car has correct rubber floor mats. The steering wheel is equipped with optional horn ring, a feature with which the car was originally equipped per its Certificate of Authenticity. The horn button is excellent. The dashboard is in very good condition, although there are some chips and scratches near the key hole, and the car has an incorrect switch for the sunroof. The instruments and switches are excellent. The door panels are very nice as well, and the headliner is in great shape. The car is equipped with a Golde sunroof although the Certificate of Authenticity makes no mention of it.

The engine is clean and presentable, and surprisingly well detailed. Although not perfectly spotless, it has obviously seen cosmetic freshening and is well above a typical driver level. The trunk is unrestored and correct in appearance, with correct plastic liner tray and original leather spare tire retaining strap, an unusual feature that is usually a brand new replacement in most cars. The firewall, fuses, and ventilation components in the trunk are all in nice unrestored condition with no untoward modifications.

The undercarriage is in exceptional shape. The original floors and longitudinals are in excellent shape, and the undercarriage is entirely original other than the battery box, which has been replaced. The engine is quite clean as well.

The car runs and drives extremely well. The engine is quite strong, and the gearbox is excellent. The steering and chassis are tight, responsive, and engaging in the inimitable Porsche fashion. The disc brakes are also effective and confidence inspiring in a way that contrasts starkly with drum brakes.

This is an excellent opportunity to acquire a superb driving sunroof-equipped 356C. The car is a pleasure to drive and is in fine structural condition with an excellent body. It is cosmetically presentable, but would also make an ideal car to drive while gradually improving it. It comes with extra keys, owner’s manual, certificate of authenticity, jack, and tool roll with tools.
