1960 Mercedes Benz 300 SL Roadster
s/n 198042-10-002768, Engine no. 198980-10-002838
White with Red Leather
The 300SL was one of the most exotic cars available when it was new. Directly descended from racing cars, and chock full of innovative features, they were fast, beautiful, and expensive. Arguably the first `supercar` ever (others claim that honor should be bestowed upon the Lamborghini Miura), the 300SL has been described as the McLaren F1 of its day. Surrounded by separate frame carbureted contemporaries, the SL was truly a glimpse of the future and remains today a very special car. Their appeal is timeless and consequently, they have remained `blue-chip` collector cars that are always in demand and perhaps even culturally embedded as one of the greatest cars of all time. The roadster version was for many years overshadowed by the stunning Gullwing; however, as more savvy enthusiasts have become privy to the advantages of the roadster, their values are now catching up to those of the coupes. Indeed, the increased practicality of proper doors with wind-up windows, improved drivability from the revised rear suspension, and inimitable open air experience make the roadster a more enjoyable car to use than the Gullwing.
This particular car is a matching numbers example throughout, which has just emerged from a comprehensive restoration which included an engine and transmission rebuild, among other major works. The car was white (#50), with red leather (#1079) when new, and appears to have been originally sold through Grossman Motor Car Corp. in West Nyack, New York, as a US delivery car. The current owners purchased this Roadster from a long term owner in Bozeman, Montana, and immediately embarked on a Comprehensive restoration to original specifications.
The car was repainted in its original color, the chrome redone, and the interior restored with fresh seat upholstery. Inclusive of the repaint, new rubber seals were installed throughout. The top, in serviceable condition, was retained. The wheels were restored and fitted with 5 new tires. While apart, the chassis was primed and painted. The engine bay has been completely detailed to show standards with correct equipment and zinc finishes throughout.
While considerable cosmetic work was carried out, the primary focus of the restoration work was on the mechanical aspects. In addition to the engine and transmission rebuilds, the brake system was serviced including all hydraulic seals, hoses, and the booster. Much of the ancillary equipment was restored or rebuilt including the generator, starter, fuel hoses, and oil hoses. Perhaps most importantly to the smooth running nature of the 300SL is the fuel injection pump, which was sent out and completely rebuilt by a specialist. The oil cooler, fuel tank, radiator, and heater core were all restored. Various suspension bushings were replaced, a new exhaust system fitted, a new throw out bearing installed, and the driveshaft rebuilt and balanced. Receipts on file to support the work described above total approximately $90,000.
Today, the car can be described as a restored, event ready example mechanically, with freshly completed, nice driver cosmetics. The car runs and drives exceptionally making good power with tight, responsive controls.
Included with the car is jack, tool roll with tools, and restored spare wheel with matching new tire. On file is a letter from Mercedes-Benz of North America confirming this example has its matching engine, transmission and body. This is a great opportunity to acquire a capably restored and extremely attractive example of this desirable car. The quality restoration displays well, yet it is not over restored, making this the ideal car to use in events and enjoy without fear of spoiling it.
