1954 Fiat Stanguellini Bertone Berlinetta
s/n 71366, Engine no. 103.000 *073540*
Pale Yellow with Grey Cloth and Cuoio Leather

Designed by the legendary Franco Scaglione, this striking car was intended to be part of a small run of coachbuilt cars using high performance Stanguellini powerplants based on Fiat 1100 TV running gear. With its rakishly styled fastback, split rear window, headlamps integrated into the grille, and rear fins, the car shares a number of features from the contemporary Alfa Romeo B.A.T. series, also done by Scaglione for Bertone.

Ultimately, just a handful of these cars were built, and this particular car was intended for the Paris and New York Auto Shows. Reportedly, its first owner was Briggs Cunningham, who bought the car off the New York Auto Show floor for his wife Laura. The car’s next owner was Luciano Tonino, an Italian who had moved to New Jersey and who continued to have close ties to family and friends in Italy, and whom gave it to his little brother Alciente as a wedding gift in 1955. He kept the car for 51 years, selling it to its current owner in September of 2006. The car was complete and unrestored, and the new owner embarked ona a four year show quality. The work was performed by Joe Ventura Restorations in San Diego, California, with engine and transmission by Jere Brown. The car was shown at the prestigious 2010 Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance, and in 2011, the car was shown at Concorso Italiano, where the car won Best in Class and Best in Show.

The car’s condition is of course outstanding. The paintwork was completed to the high standards necessary to compete in high level shows, and the panel fit and gaps are excellent across the board. The paint is in excellent condition, and is nearly unmarked, with only a handful of very small blemishes. The numerous unique coachbuilt details are beautifully preserved, and the chrome and trim are excellent. The glass and lamps are excellent, including the Marchal headlamps. The wheels are excellent as well, and wear correct Borrani stickers.

The interior is in equally nice condition and is superbly detailed, from the beautifully textured instrument panel to the magnificently wrought metal door hardware and rich tan leather accents. The attention to detail and craftsmanship are evident throughout. The sill plates are beautiful and elegant, and the sun visors are the delicate type made of shaded glass that is typical of the 1950s. The upholstery and leather are excellent throughout, as are the switches and instruments. The steering wheel is excellent save for a small crack where one of the spokes meets the center.

The rear compartment is equally well-detailed, with lovely carpeting with matching tan leather accents. The spare and jack are both present and restored. The rear hatch is side-hinged and features a neatly integrated parcel shelf. The engine compartment is extremely clean and correct throughout. It is wonderfully detailed with correct markings, battery, fluid reservoirs, air horns, and Fram cartridge type oil filter.

This is an unrepeatable opportunity to acquire a truly unique car with exceptional history. It is a fascinating piece of Italian automotive and design history with many unique coachbuilt details. Additionally, it is a welcome entrant to virtually any major concrours event in the world, and has been beautifully restored to the highest standards and is accordingly in irreproachable condition.
