Early 911’s embody a combination that is rare among collector cars today. They have unparalleled drivability and usability, especially when compared with other cars of the same vintage, but are also evocative of a different era. There is a certain wholeness, cohesiveness, agility, and communicativeness that is only evident when they are driven, and it is no surprise that they have a fanatical following. Until quite recently, however, they were just used cars, which makes finding genuinely solid examples which have been continuously cared throughout the car’s life very difficult today. All early 911’s have appreciated tremendously in recent years, and the earlier short wheelbase cars (1968 and earlier) have seen particularly strong interest. Of these cars, the 1967 911S is perhaps the most desirable, thanks to its combination of the charm of the earlier cars with the performance and equipment of the later cars.

Introduced for the 1967 model year, the 911S featured a comprehensive range of performance enhancements, including revised carburetion and camshafts to yield no less than 160hp from its 1991cc’s, a remarkable specific output for the era. The S package also encompassed the chassis, with the first fitment of the now legendary Fuchs forged alloy wheels, ventilated brake discs, Koni shock absorbers, and enlarged sway bar. The interior and exterior also received special treatment, in the form of a leather rimmed steering wheel, basketweave dashboard trim, thicker deco strips, and special badging. 1968 models were substantially the same, but lost the delicate door handles and lovely green font gauges with chrome bezels that were unique to the 1967 and earlier 911s.

This particular example was sold new to T. King Hedinger of Berea, Ohio. King-Hedinger quickly prepared it for C Production/B Sedan racing. In 1969, King-Hedinger's 3rd-place finish in the SCCA's Central Division's B Sedan points contest earned him an invitation to the National Runoffs at Daytona International Raceway, where he finished a respectable 5th place, behind four other 911s. Later on in 1971 he would bring his car back to the Daytona Runoffs where he took 9th in class.

In 1972 the car was sold to a Florida resident who drove it on the street for a number of years. In 1977 it was acquired by Ara Dube of Daytona Beach, Florida. Mr. Dube ran the car in the 1977 Daytona 24 Hours, but only hours into the race, the car suffered a fractured oil cooler. A spectator volunteered to let the team take his completely stock engine from his 60,000 mile 1967 911S Targa, which was parked close by, and install it into the crippled race car. Though the car required a new clutch and some new rocker arms before the race ended, Dube and his co-drivers brought the car home 8th in GTU and 21st overall. In 1984, Dube also participated in the SCCA Runoffs.

The car was vintage-raced in the late 1980’s by Bill Ferran, Roy Sanders, and Dr. Al Carlotti. It was later owned by Prescott Kelly and Klubsport Racing. Klubsport completely restored the car to its original King-Hedinger livery in 2007. Following its appearance at Rennsport III at Daytona, the car came to the West Coast and was fitted with a fresh twin-plug, 2.0 litre racing motor and transaxle, prepared by Porsche expert Jeff Gamroth of Rothsport in Tualatin, Oregon. The mechanical and engine work totaled more than $27,000 and has seen just one race weekend since.

The car is fitted with custom built six-inch wide lightweight alloy wheels. The tires (A038) should be replaced with new rubber before racing. The interior includes a pair of new 911R-style racing seats. Included with the car is its original numbers-matching engine case, damaged but repairable, FIA history, extensive documentation and period photos of the car in action.

This is an outstanding opportunity to acquire an early 911S, an ideal example to use and enjoy. A superb example in all the areas that truly count. Structurally and mechanically, the car is in delightful shape.
